Start Today out of Los Angeles are taking the modern day hardcore scene by storm with their charged Youth Crew style of hardcore and consistently playing out. They are currently in the midst of playing a 36 date tour opening for Terror, Pain Of Truth and End It. The average age of this five piece band is a little over 18 years old and they just put out the 9 song “Nothing To You” record on Rebirth Records this past March. You will see more of their commitment when you read this interview which took place with the entire band responding from the road. IE: What’s up? Can you tell us exactly where you are right now and what would you usually be doing at this time of the day if you weren’t answering these questions?
ST: Yo, what’s up we’re all in the van on the way to the first show in Colorado right now. If we weren’t answering these we’d probably be listening to music or hanging out somewhere at a gas station. If we weren’t on tour Hudson and Angus would be in school and the rest of us at work.
IE: Can you give us everyone’s name/age and what they do in Start Today?
ST: Angus (17) – vocals, David (20) – bass, Tate (18) – guitar, Yavi (20) -guitar, Hudson (17) -drums.
IE: Start Today began a US tour on April 22nd opening for Terror, Pain Of Truth and End It. The tour runs Coast to Coast, has over 30 dates and runs through June 6th. Obviously a great opportunity for the band considering you have a brand new record out. Can you tell us what the mindset is amongst the members of Start Today at the beginning of this tour?
ST: We’re all stoked. It’s a crazy tour to be a part of especially with like 15 minutes of music released haha. Terror was a band we all took inspo from together when we first started so to play a single show with them let alone a tour feels super cool. Hudson and Angus took the last 2 months off of junior year and I (Tate) graduated a semester early to do this tour.
IE: The band started out in 2024 and you released a demo late that same year. In some ways you are still a new band but at the same time you guys have already played a ton of shows on each coast as well as hitting the Midwest hard as well. When the band was in its early stages was everyone envisioning this sort of quick rise into touring as much as you do now or did it just sort of develop into that this thing that has accelerated quicker than you imagined?
ST: None of us really have any crazy master plan with the band. We just make music we like and play shows with bands we’d want to hangout with.
IE: Can you give us a short list of some of the more interesting or favorite shows Start Today has played so far?
ST: Some of our favorites have been the record release, playing Town of Hardcore in Toronto, and this Chinese restaurant in LA called Genghis Cohen before it moved. Toronto was really fun and a super unexpected reaction for the first time playing internationally.

IE: Does anyone in the band keep track of where you have gone and how many shows you have played?
ST: David keeps track of almost every show we’ve played with a binder full of set lists and stuff like that from the shows. Not sure of how many exact shows it’s been, but his favorite thing from the binder is a setlist from the show we played with Scarab at Chain Reaction before it closed down.
IE: When you are out on tour who in the band is the most trusted band member to take care of playing songs on the radio in the car or van? Who are some bands that everyone in Start Today can agree on as favorites?
ST: We were all listening to a bunch of different stuff going into this recording, but the whole band was feeling Stop And Think and Carry On for most of the inspiration musically. When we’re in the van David is trusted with the aux mostly. Lots of Jimmy Eat World ensues.
IE: Who came up with the idea to use the name Start Today for this bands name? I see you have played at least one show with Gorilla Biscuits as well. Did you hang out with them at that show and did the use of the name “Start Today” come up at all?
ST: We were pretty stuck on names for a second and I (Tate) suggested the name… everyone likes the album of course. Now the name isn’t really our favorite but it’s not terrible. It hasn’t really come up with the GB dudes actually but they were super nice when we played with them. At this point we don’t really associate it as much as a GB nod but more of just a band name.
IE: Who are the members of Start Today and can you give us an interesting fact about each of them?
ST: David… has perfect pitch, can play almost anything by ear. Hudson… drummer of Peace Cross. Tate… best in the band at skateboarding. Angus… Lego collecting. Yavi… Diamond 5 on Overwatch.

IE: How did the members of Start Today initially find each other? Did you all know each other before starting the band?
ST: Hudson and Angus went to school together and the rest of us met going to shows playing in a few other bands.
IE: Do your parents or close family members pay close attention to what you all are doing with this band and can you give us any stories about their feelings whether its pro or con?
ST: Our families and siblings are super supportive of the band and everything we’ve done so far. A few of our parents come from music and they love watching us play.
IE: For a band that has been around for approximately 2 years you have accomplished a lot with consistent releases and playing out. What are some of your own personal goals that you would like to see get done with this band in the next couple of years?
ST: We all really want to tour Japan and just keep touring a lot in general. As long as we keep putting out music we would mosh to that’s a personal goal for all of us.
IE: You guys are obviously from a major city in Los Angeles and have been all across the US in the last couple of years. With that said what is your take on the current state of hardcore?
ST: Hardcore is super diverse across the whole country and there’s a lot of really cool bands we have played with. We all want to see more kids our age playing in bands (fast, heavy, whatever). It’s awesome to see all the bands playing Youth Crew and faster hardcore across the country as well.
